Kama

Summary

The Kama is sickle-like and was initially used as a farming implement to reap crops in the Philippines and Japan. However, later it became an improvised tool used to strike an opponent’s weapon during close-ranged fighting.

HISTORY

As a weapon, it was first used in 1470 after the Japanese military confiscated traditional weapons. Okinawan commoners then used the Kama as a fighting blade. Sometimes, to extend their reach, they attached a chain at the base of the instrument.

PRESENT DAY

As for now, the Kama is most commonly used in demonstrations, and sometimes, in competitions.
