Jieishudan

Summary

Jieishudan is a hybrid creation and is a blend of various time tested self-defence martial arts, including Boxing, ground fighting, and Grappling. With some improvisations to the existing fighting styles, a dynamic form was created and baptised with a new name. This martial art sprung up in England, thanks to the martial arts fever that the world caught onto. People considered it their birthright to become masters in self-defence, as if the world was all out to knock them off. And yes, if someone happens to become an expert in this art, they can effectively neutralize any attack, whether empty handed or armed.

History / Origins

ETYMOLOGY

To begin with, get the basic pronunciation right, Jieishudan is pronounced as ‘gee-shoo-dan’ and this Japanese term translates to ‘measures to defend one self.’ The backbone of this martial art is self-defence, rather than attack. It aptly defines the character of the art.

BEGINNINGS

The co-founder of this young generation of martial arts was named Ian Zeff and he put his efforts into forming this fighting style in the 1980s. At that time, before Jieishudan was officially recognized or given any name, various street self-defence martial arts were floating around, and teenagers and young guns of the times took upon themselves to learn a few tricks of martial arts. Various martial arts instructors from different fighting backgrounds did their share of the spade-work by behaving like good Samaritans and offered their free services to train the youth, and teach them a few tricks that were up their sleeves. Hence, there was no uniformity of techniques, and it was free for all to try out any type of technique provided the end result was in your favour. The training programs ‘rumbled in the alleys’ of the UK where the training was carried out at a feverish pitch in various clubs.

PRESENT DAY

Today Jieishudan is the member of AMA, ‘Amateur Martial Association,’ which is the hub of martial arts in the UK. Currently there are many courses and to upgrade the skills of Jieishudan, there is no better place than the ‘Jieishudan School’ at Hendon Central, London, UK. The various levels of fighting skills have been categorised and the curriculums are laid down for interested people to learn high quality martial arts and use it for self-defence. The different courses include Ryukyu Kempo Karate and Small Circle Jujitsu along with weapon training, which is also taught there. The fighter learns about the various tricks of pressure point strikes, joint-lock grappling, getting out from chokes and holds and learns weapons self-defence as well. Jiei Shudan School boasts of high quality instructors who work with passion and dedication to get the best out of the students. There are various seminars, and classes conducted across UK to make the citizens aware of this unique art.

FOLKLORE

The dynamic environment of various martial arts training centres had the chemistry for the formation of something unique. The atoms of different martial arts began attracting each other, and combined to become some definitive movements. Each style worked in co-ordination, rather than confrontation, and thus contributed to the development of some concise movements, which had some basic principle, and with some modifications made them into a new combative form and gave it the name ‘Jieishudan.’

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy and soul of this combative art is self-defence. It was crafted at the times when people were looking to protect themselves from getting mugged in the street, which led to the evolution of this fighting art. It is also meant to boost self-confidence. Armed with the time tested techniques of this martial art, people are taught to be ready to take on the world. The principles of Jieishudan also believe that age is just a number, hence people of all age groups are welcome. Being itself reformed from constant evolution, it preaches self-development to all its trainees. Students should always look to upgrade themselves by focusing and becoming more apt in the fighting techniques.
