Yolanda tells Awakening, “I started Boxercise for fitness, training once a week in 2010. After 2 years I stopped taking dance classes at the studio and replaced it with MMA, BJJ and Kickboxing 3 nights a week. A torn shoulder led me to 7 months off training and when I returned, I found myself at a wonderful Muay Thai Gym, where I became addicted. At this point I still had NO intention of becoming a fighter. 5 months of being under the guidance of Andrew Parnham, I decided I wanted to fight. I took on my first fight on 11th of October 2013. An ankle injury on the sports field had me out of training for 7 months after my second fight, but I’m back and stronger than before, I aspire to inspire before I expire!”

Yolanda Schmidt is a female Muay Thai fighter who was born in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. She currently lives and fights out of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

An injury and a scare, Yolanda vs. Nong Beau

(In her own words, as told to Awakening in 2022)
"I made it to the Gold medal bout at the Arafura games in 2018, in Darwin. I wanted that gold medal more than anything and I had worked so incredibly hard in preparation for the games. In the first 5 seconds of the fight, literally the first punch I threw, I ruptured my hamstring.

I faked the jab and launched in for the cross (straight right hand), as I planted all my weight onto my lead leg (Left) to throw that cross, Nong Biew connected me with a push kick to the thigh of the left leg. I went down immediately and obviously stood up right away. However, upon placing weight onto that left leg, I was in excruciating pain. I know most people say I probably wouldnt feel much with adrenaline rushing through me and all, but feeling the pain is an indicator of how much pain that actually was. I have been trained to keen a game face and so did not wince or give anything away to my opponent or her corner that I was in pain. I had 3 seconds to analyse my options. 1: throw in the towel, 2: change to Southpaw, 3: suck it up and just continue.

I chose to continue, as I had worked too hard to get this far and go home with the Silver medal. between round 1 and 2, my coaches were made aware of the situation and asked me if I wanted to continue or throw in the towel, I refused to throw in the towel, tha hami was already gone, it couldn't get any worse and I had surrounding muscles strong enough to get me through. We changed up the game plan and chose to not stand in front of her and trade, but rather score and move and I aimed for the clinch to prevent the pressure on the leg. I'm the second round I landed 3 very clean elbows consecutively that not only knocked her out, but knocked her head gear clean off.

What followed was super scary, Nong Biew was completely out of it when she dragged herself to standing, she staggered across the canvas toward me, something very scary as there was a hazed look in her eyes. The referee jumped in to stop her from making it to me, but it was honestly a scary feeling.

With that said, I think subconsciously I was in so much pain that I just wanted to get the fight done with, and am so thankful for a stoppage in the second round.

10 days after this fight I was under the knife where they repaired my tendon, three pins were drilled into my pelvis, the hamstring tendon is shaved a little shorter to clean it up and it is now surgically reattached. The rehabilitation took almost two years and surgeons were not convinced I would make a return to the ring. This took a heap of dedication, and lots of emotion to get me back to the ring."

Personal Life

Yolanda works as a health and physical education teacher, dance instructor, and sports coach.

In 2018, Yolanda got a job working for MTA Athlete's Commission, and because the Vice President of IFMA Athlete's Commission.

She has represented South Africa at the Irish Dancing World Championships.
