My brother-in-law, Joe Bradley, was involved in many areas of boxing and he would spar with people at a property he had for training and sparring. One day there was no one to spar with so he asked me to put on the gloves. He said he would take it easy with me. He showed me how to do the punches, especially how to do a left hook. We sparred and I caught him off guard with a hook on his jaw, and from that day one he trained me everyday. When I started out I never thought I would some day become the World Bantamweight Champion. I was happy that I won a litigation against the California Athletic Commission for women to fight more than 4 rounds in California. My manager, Joe Bradley, had me sue to be allowed to fight men. We won on that too and there was talk about me fighting a man named Johnny ‘Bang Bang’ Jackson, but I retired undefeated so my fight with a man never took place.”

Shirley Tucker’s Bio

Shirley Tucker is a female boxer fighter from Redmond, Oregon, United States.

She is regarded as a pioneer of women’s Boxing in California. She challenged the California Athletic Commission on two issues for women in Boxing. Firstly, she fought for the right for women’s boxing bouts to be scheduled for longer than 4 rounds, and succeeded after a lawsuit in the 1970s. Secondly, she fought for a woman’s right to enter a fight against a man, which passed in 1982 after she had retired.

She fought Denise Moorehead in the first event in California to have a female main event with men as the supporting bouts. Shirley’s fight versus Ginate Troy was the first women’s fight to be scheduled for 10 rounds in California.

On April 18th, 1980, Shirley rematched Karen Bennett in the first woman’s fight in the world to be scheduled for 12.
