Shinhee tells Awakening, “I used to watch Boxing matches on TV and live with my father as a little girl. My father would work out in a Boxing gym in Seongnam and take me with him. When I was 19 I decided to try Boxing out. I wanted to become serious and spar like the others, but my coach told me I couldn’t because he was too busy with the official fighters. He told me if I wanted to, I had to fight a girl for her position at the upcoming amateur competition. I ended up winning the position to both of our surprise with a few hard punches, knocking her out. My initial goal was really diet and losing weight. I had no idea my goal would eventually be a world championship, until I won my first gold medal in amateur fighting.”
