Do you feel that your experience within Muay Thai and MMA will help you, or would you consider Boxing a completely separate entity that needs a fresh approach?

Ashley Nichols

“In Muaythai we have 8 limbs to utilize in different ranges with various counters and attacks to keep in mind. And MMA is another beast all on its own as well. I feel boxing is different with the footwork, the combinations, punchers vs. boxers and the intellect is different too. All in all, it is a new challenge and I am determined to do my best, really get the fans excited, as well as do well by my coach and team and put it all in the ring and prove I can box as well.”

Are there any female fighters that have inspired you along the way?

Ashley Nichols

“For me early on for just boxing, I was inspired by Laila Ali and the fact that she did so well in her career is great too, also I saw it as she was also following in her father’s footsteps, which was fascinating to me. For Muaythai, it’s been Germaine De Randamie and Jorina Baars of the Netherlands, Julie Kitchen of the UK, and for MMA Ronda Rousey to name some really big inspirations! I really want to prove this as another chance to be inspired and inspire others with my first-ever boxing match on the NCWB1 stage.”

Our penultimate question is slightly more personal, but just an interesting, can you tell us about your ethnic background?

Ashley Nichols

“I am Aniishnaabe or First Nation’s, my lineage is with the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and my ancestors were the original people from the land here now known as Canada and North America. I feel connected to and feel I get a lot of my determination, spirit, strength, and tenacity from the spirit of my people. The history, culture, and the present has motivated me to want to create a lasting legacy that will inspire myself, the youth, and many more to rise above all odds and move forward towards their calling, towards their passion of where they feel most empowered and determined!”

..and the last question now, where do you see yourself if five years' time?

Ashley Nichols

“In five years, I want to continue to give back to the community through martial arts, to inspire and empower the youth, young women, and others the same way Muaythai, Boxing, and MMA has inspired me. I see a few more belts in professional combat sports, and also see myself inspiring others to train and do the same and beyond.”

A big thank you to Kru Chris and the team at MAS Martial Arts in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada for all the training, the energy, and the amazing training environment! Thank you to boxing Coach Billy Irwin in Niagara Falls, Canada, for welcoming me to the team and passing the knowledge of boxing. I want to give a special thanks to Ring Royalty Fight Supply Co. for their support and the wicked design on my “Dream Bigger” walkout T-shirt.
