An interview with Natasha Sky:

Natasha Sky Interview

Rew Mitchell

Natasha Sky is a Muay Thai fighter from Australia, and over the last twelve months has been spending more and more of her free time working on her blog, Muay Tash, in which she predominantly interviews female Muay Thai fighters from around the world. It is for this blog that Natasha was voted Journalist of the Year in the Awakening Female Muay Thai 2013 Awards, you should definitely check it out if female Muay Thai gossip is your bag!

Hi Tash, and congratulations! We saw how happy you were when you announced it on facebook, and it was a really great thing to witness. For the benefit of those that missed your touching outbursts, can we get you to repeat yourself? What were your first thoughts on finding out you had won?

Natasha Sky

“I never expected to win, I didn’t think that many people would have voted for me as there were actually real Journalists in the nominations haha… plus I can’t even spell or use proper grammar.”

Rew Mitchell

Yes we know.. We think it’s endearing! We're sure you'll agree, the category was completely stacked - there are lots of female Muay Thai blogs that have been around a while and continue to intrigue audiences. What is it about female written Muay Thai blogs that makes them grow in popularity?

Natasha Sky

“Yeah for sure! There are so many popping up now and I try to like and follow all of them. I think they make female fighters feel like they have some support. A lot of the time you might be the only female fighter in the gym and it’s really hard to explain things you are maybe going through to your trainer or your male training partners. I think that the female fighter blogs can help you relate to the things other female fighters go through and realise that you’re not a freak haha… it happens to a lot of other female fighters too.”

Rew Mitchell

And were you inspired by any particular fighters or blogs before you decided to start your own?

Natasha Sky

“I was always telling stories of experiences I’d had being a female fighter and so many people would tell me I could write a book because of some or the crazy things I had been through. I never really thought anyone would be interested in hearing about it. Plus people in Muay Thai in Australia could be a bit funny about that sort of thing. I didn’t want to offend people or make them think I was big noting or making excuses for losing fights as some of my stories were pretty unbelievable. I started talking to Sylvie (8limbs.us blog) & her husband Kevin who encouraged me to start a blog. Kevin set it all up for me over the internet and helped me so much at the start while I was getting used to it, then away I went. Writing my own stories wasn’t enough because I had come across so many inspiring women. I wanted people to know who they were as well, and to read even just the most basic bit of information about someone can be comforting to a female fighter that may have no other females around to talk to. So that’s where the interviews came in.”

Rew Mitchell

Let's take a look back at your 2013 interviews, how many did you do? And which ones are you most proud of?

Natasha Sky

“I surprised myself here, I didn’t actually realise how many I had done until I looked it up at the end of the year. I had done 27 female fighter interviews. I don’t have any in particular that I’m proud of because I’m proud of them all! I’m proud to have been able to help girls with one fight and girls with 50 fights get out there and have their say and time in the spot light. I like to make everyone feel like they are a part of the sport whether they are well known or not.

Rew Mitchell

And how do you decide on the next fighter to interview?

Natasha Sky

“I normally try to keep an eye out for names I see comment on posts on facebook or that pop up in places on the net. Maybe I see a young girl fight at a show that no one really knows about so I’ll try to get and interview from her to get her name out there. I like to try to find girls from around the world that people don’t hear much about too. It’s very interesting to see the different views from female fighters around the world, but at the same time see how similar we all are. I would love to be able to interview some Thai Girls but it’s hard when they can’t speak or write English.”

Rew Mitchell

Yes we’re in the same boat with the Thai girls, looking for a way to get them represented on here. Are there any fighters that you've had your writing sights set on for some time? ..and who do you have coming up in the near future?

Natasha Sky

“Not really, it’s all pretty random but like I said it would be great to be able to interview someone like Sawsing if they could write back to me in English. Maybe when I get back to Thailand I can get someone to help translate.”

Rew Mitchell

Going back to the awards briefly, what is your opinion of the Awakening Female Muay Thai Awards?

Natasha Sky

“I think it is and awesome idea I’m really grateful to Awakening for putting in the hard work. Some days I get down because I feel like I do a lot of hard work, fighting and with my blog and no one really cares but having the awards has shown me that people do appreciate the effort I put in. I think the awards will only get better with each year!!”

Rew Mitchell

Thank you in return, we’re sure that things will only get better each year too... and the last question, or rather, some air time for you to give some thanks or shout outs to anyone….GO!

Natasha Sky

“Ok well first Thank you to everyone at Awakening for your hard work, putting the awards together and your faith in female fighters. Thank you to Sylvie and Kevin - I wouldn’t have a blog if it wasn’t for the encouragement and all the help they gave me to get started. Thank you to Rosy for always sharing my posts on the Female Muay Thai on Facebook Group. Thank you to all the female fighters who let me interview them throughout the year, keep on banging ladies! Thank you to all my opponents, trainers, gyms, haters without you I would have nothing to write about. Thank you to my sponsors PUNCH, Dominatress Apparel and The Vault Toowoomba. Thank you to all my readers for putting up with my bad spelling, grammar and weird wording and for voting for me and showing the love… And thank you to my Mum and Dad for having such an awesome ginger ninja me! haha”

Rew Mitchell

Well thanks a lot for taking the time out to speak to us Tash, and we look forward to continue following your fight career as well as your writing!
