An Interview with Jorina Baars – part 1
Jorina Baars needs no introduction these days. For quite some time she has been respected (and feared) within the Muay Thai community, especially within Europe! So much so, she struggled to get fights for two years. With her dominating win in March, over Cristiane 'Cyborg' Justino, her global presence has increased tenfold - as well it should! As the most viewed female fighter on our athlete database, it's only right that we grab her for some questions!
Hi Jorina, thank you for speaking with us in the run up to Lion Fight in September!! We're honoured!
“Hello, thank you!!”
We'll start with a question we've been dying to ask you. Before your fight with Cyborg, we witnessed quite a lot of fight fans judging you on your MMA record, saying that you were a 'nobody'. How did that feel, and how did it feel to silence them?
“I smiled inside when I read it and thought “you don't know me guys so call me a nobody” or some people said on Facebook “Jorina can't win from cyborg” or “Jorina R.I.P.”..... I saw all those bullshit things on the internet but that makes me stronger.”
Yes, some of the comments weren’t very nice at all. For those that saw the video of your post fight interview… your reaction to that question was priceless! 🙂 You turned a lot of heads with the defeat of Cyborg, has anything changed since that win? Do you enjoy being in the spotlight and more well-known because of beating such a high profile opponent?
“Yes sure, I’ve had a lot of interviews in the media all over the world and I'm on the front page of a magazine in Holland. In Europe most of the people know me, but now in America they know me also. I like it that my Awakening profile is watch so many times every month!! Normally I'm not a spotlight fan but it felt good!”
We’re glad you mentioned your Awakening profile because we were going to ask about that. For the benefit of first time visitors to our website, each month we publish a list of the most viewed athlete profiles in our database. Jorina has been the MOST viewed fighter over the last five months by a long way, and she has had the number 1 spot a crazy four times! What are your thoughts on all this love that the community is giving you?
“wauwwwww that's what I think every month when I see it!!!! I never thought it. But I think people like to watch my profile to see who I am.”
It's commonly known that you were unable to find anyone to fight you for two years. What's it like now being able to fight more regularly? How often would you like to be fighting?
“It's good because I love fighting and training. But I still need to work 5 days a week, so when I start training for a fight it's hard to plan everything well enough for me to train and take my rest as well. So 2 or 3 fights a year is good for me.”
You defend your title against Anke Van Gestel at Lion Fight on September 5th. What do you know about her?
“She is a technical fighter. But I think I have more power and techniques.”
Both being based in Europe, having fought some of the same opponents (Martina Jindrova, Hatice Ozyurt etc), and around the same weight, was there any reason why this fight between you two hadn't taken place yet? Or did you expect this matchup to be made at some point?
“I don't know.... Anke is normally fighting at 61-63,5 kg so maybe that's the reason? And I think this is a good match in America as she get’s her name on the card outside Europe.”
